Above is a picture of Winston-Salem today, down below is a picture from Old Salem depicting what the town looked like in the 1800's.
In 1766 the Wachovia Tract became known as Salem. The Moravians were known as fine craftsmen. They were skilled in pottery, iron, quilting and furniture making. All of these skills made Salem into a bustling trade city. These crafts are still widely showcased in Winston-Salem today. Salem’s merchandising made them a key player in the American Revolution and Civil War. While all of this was happening, a similar town was forming just to the North of Salem. Winston was established in 1851 named after Major Joseph Winston. Winston became an industrialized city after the Civil War. R.J Reynolds and the Hanes family helped Winston become a bustling city. Winston eventually came out as the leader in tobacco and textile manufacturing. In 1913 the two cities came to the realization that more success was to come if they united, rather than staying separate. By joining together the two cities were about to pool their resources and become a strong city. |
