The tobacco Industry is a huge part of Winston-Salem's history. In the 1800's the main cash crop in Winston-Salem was tobacco, which led to a high tobacco use among the people, as well as a great source of revenue for the town. However in the late 1900's this began to change when the research of Dr. George Howard was published and spoke about the dangers of cigarette smoking. Today there is still a tobacco presence in the town, though not as much. There is one restaurant, Little Richards, that is decorated on the inside with old cigarette memorabilia. It is interesting to see how much ads from cigarette companies have since changed. Below is a photo essay depicting some of the advertisements.
In these old cigarette ads it is noticeable how cigarette smoking was seen as "cool" and not harmful at all. There is even an ad with a doctor on it who is promoting smoking! Joe Camel was a character on Camel cigarettes who appealed to children. Joe Camel was seen as very cool and hip, and a lot of children saw him on cigarette packages and felt like they would be cool too. Today Joe Camel is no longer used, because of his appeal to young children.
