1753: The Moravians are a Christian religious group who relocated around 1753. They were attracted to mid-North Carolina because of the fertile soil, and moderate temperatures.
1766: Before the Moravians named the area Salem, it was called the Wachovia Tract.
In 1766 the Wachovia Tract became known as Salem.
1851: Winston was established in 1851 named after Major Joseph Winston. Winston became an industrialized city after the Civil War. R.J Reynolds and the Hanes family helped Winston become a bustling city. Winston eventually came out as the leader in tobacco and textile manufacturing.
1800's: Throughout the 1800's tobacco was the main cash crop of the two towns. It is was helped them become big cities, and have successful economies.
1913: In 1913 the two cities came to the realization that more success was to come if they united, rather than staying separate. By joining together the two cities were about to pool their resources and become a strong city.
1990's: Over time the town’s views on tobacco use have changed, much like everyone else’s views on tobacco. George Howard was a doctor in Winston Salem in the nineties. He was often harassed when he went into the city, and received threatening phone calls to his home. This was all because he had published information that said smoking cigarettes was unhealthy.
